Director Journal Week 14-Review Public Screening

Public Screening was successfully held at amphitheater in the Faculty of Built Environment on 27 May (Tuesday) with effort of every students who taking Directing Class and also our audiences supports from Production TV Class. This amphitheater is an open-air venue used for entertainment, performances, and of course it's really good for public screening too.
We always afraid that it will be raining and we might miss such a good place for public screening. Fortunately, there is no rain but we still able to see a few star on the skies (maybe it's just artificial satellite? Hahahaha!!!) Around 8.00pm, the technical team finally turn up to set all those screening's stuff. I really love the environment and atmosphere there especially when the bossa nova music and 80's song were being played,it's just so relaxing.  The screening finally begin at 9pm. Like what we had watched on Screening Night, but this time is more casual and we could exchange some ideas with friends sitting besides because this is the second time we watched. Besides it's a very nice experience to watch films at outdoor, first time ever!! I noticed changes on some short films which is the subtitles has been added. The audience could catch up faster about the storyline and  especially for the first time viewer.
Lastly, our public screening ended with light refreshments and presents exchange session. I only got 3 pens for the presents exchange session just because of the host request us to exchange with the person who standing in front. The person who stand in front of me take away my present with grining and give me the pens that she got. What a SAD case!!!!
Anyway, good luck in exam, friends!

Director Journal Week 12: Review-Screening Night 2014

Finally comes to our media department's the most exciting annual event----SCREENING NIGHT~~

There are total 14 productions including our PSA production are being played for non stop which consist different variety of genre such as documentary, horror, public service announcement, short film, commercial and etc. Suddenly realized that I didn't take any picture throughout the productions presentation because I was too concentrated to watch them, ahahaha~
Overall, my favorite production will goes to a short film named: Inspector Petonah who directed by Syazwan. It has a good and humor storyline and mature editing skills.Besides, there is another 2 production which has a really good twisted storyline such as Zahirah and After Storm. For Zahirah, this short film begin with the narration of Zahirah's mother who keep praising her daughter achievement but ends up with Zahirah's creepy smile,it seems like indicate something wrong with Zahirah. While After Storm begins with a running bride and being comforted and accompanied by a guy. At first, we thought that guy was the groom but because he appear with a very formal outfit like groom and yet he was trying to comfort the bride and make her smile. In the end, the bride left with another guy.Very good twisted story indeed!
Epilogue is awesome too! The color tone they used throughout the video has successfully convey the retro feel and atmosphere.Besides,a big credits to actor and actress as they did a really great job in this production! But I can't really understand the dialogues because there is no subtitles provided.

Unfortunately, our team didn't get to win any award that night but still really appreciate the hard work, time, effort, cooperation given by our team mate to complete our PSA production!!
 PSA team ROCKS!

While waiting for the arrival of VIP~

The decoration on the table that night~

Selfie~ haha =P

Cheers~~PSA TEAM~~

Director Journal Week 11

This week lecture we had learnt about slug lines, big print, and camera coverage and crew protocol. All these elements are very important to accomplish during pre-production and production. A slug line is unique to the screenplay and states numerous things about a scene. Often called a Master Scene Heading, it occurs at the start of every scene, and is usually made up of three parts. Here are some examples of slug lines that show how all the parts fit together:

  •   INT. JERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY
  •   EXT. PARK – NIGHT

This week, our production are being evaluated and only one person will be represent the whole group to convince our lecture. I'm the one who represented our PSA production evaluation for ART OF FILM DIRECTING. I'm really regret for not answer the questions well due to the lack of knowledge and observation during the production......However,I have try my best and end up only obtained 5 marks out of 10 marks for the evaluation. =(  Not matter how I should accept this and it's necessary to work hard to have better understanding on productions in very detail but not shallow as before. There will be another evaluation on next week by a lecture from UPM.  KEEP IT UP MATES!!

Movie Review-Never Been Kissed

“All of you people, there is a big world out there... bigger than prom, bigger than high school and it won't matter if you were the prom queen, the quarterback of the football team, or the biggest nerd in school. Find out who you are and try not to be afraid of it.” This is the epic quotes from the main character, Josie. Why is she said like this? This is because she had been fed up of what her friends’ silly action that they did toward her best friend- Gibby. Josie said: “Let me tell you something, I don't care about being your stupid prom queen. I'm 25 years old. I'm an undercover reporter for the Chicago Sun Times and I've been beating my brains out trying to impress you people. Let me tell you something Gibby, Kirsten, Kristin, you will spend your lives trying to keep others down because it makes you feel more important. Why her? Let me tell you about this girl she is unbelievable. I was new here and she befriended me no questions asked. But you, you were only my friend after my brother, Rob, posed as a student and told you to like me.” Josie ends up being the homecoming queen and ends up telling everyone that she is not 16 and that she is 25. She intend to tell those high school students about there is another reality world beside high school and she hope that everyone can find their own identity but not depending others to value the sense of presence.

Director Journal Week 10

Recently, our director still working hard on editing process for our PSA-Domestic Violence Video. While, for me still keep on finding the most suitable sound effect and music tracks. It’s hard to find a appropriate music tracks or sound effect which really can convey the mood. Besides, I also do not know where is the sources that we able to find all the tracks that we need. Keep on trying and listen and imagine matching with the scene situation.

I think this is the part of difficulties when comes to editing process, lack of sources. Seriously need to know the proper and effective way to look for sound effects!!!

Movie Review: The Chorus (Les Choristes)

A failed musician Clement Mathieu comes to a strict boys' boarding school, where the tough headmaster Racine rules over the youth with his motto of "Action-Reaction." Mr. Mathieu tries a different approach, introducing music into their lives, forming a boys' choir that allows the teacher to discover the secret musical talents of a quiet but troubled young boy named Pierre Morhange.

In my opinion, Les Choristes is a GREAT film for all to see if you can read subtitles for 1.5 hours. It's a feel-good movie that made me cry at the end (of happiness). Nobody was even crying in the movie, and there wasn't sad music, and I was still crying. My favorite character in this movie is Pepinot. This child/orphan, is extremely shy and sweet. He thinks his dad will come pick him up at the school so he waits at the gate every Sunday I believe (not sure of the day). He plays a large part in this movie, as he starts the unraveling of memories. The Chorus is sweet and heartwarming movie I ever seen before.

Director Journal Week 9

Finally our shooting comes to an end. Here comes the editing process of the video. For your information, I’m responsible for the audio searching to find the most suitable background music and sound effect for our PSA video project.  So far, I have found a few suitable tracks, however it’s not enough if director have other sound effect request.  Though we might think of film as an essentially visual experience, we really cannot afford to underestimate the importance of film sound. A meaningful sound track is often as complicated as the image on the screen. The entire sound track is comprised of three essential ingredients:
·         the human voice
·         sound effects
·         music
These three tracks must be mixed and balanced so as to produce the necessary emphases which in turn create desired effects. However we do not have voice over/dialogue in our video, hence only sound effect and music will do. Background music is used to add emotion and rhythm to the video. Usually not meant to be noticeable, it often provides a tone or an emotional attitude toward the story.

STAY TUNED FOR OUR VIDEO!!

Movie Review: Kill Bill

Kill Bill Vol. 2 begins with the same segment that opened Vol. 1 and provides the full back story of The Bride's near-death at the hands of her former colleagues. Before that, the pregnant bride rehearsing her wedding in a quaint chapel in Texas. The Bride goes outside for some fresh air and finds Bill. They hold a civil conversation, Bill asking her why she's giving up her old life and The Bride describing how she's found happiness in this simpler life. Bill comes inside with her and she, in attempt to avoid trouble, introduces her former lover as her father. Tommy, the fiancé, asks "Dad" to give The Bride away, and immediately the scene takes a turn. Bill's tone of voice drops just enough to let us know that something's gone horribly wrong, and the director pulls the camera outside the chapel. From here we can know that the how the influence of camera brings our imagination on the next story by pulling the scene very far away.

In the end of the film, Beatrix locked in a bathroom crying until her sobs turn into laughter. Beatrix cries for Bill, whom she still loves in some way, but she laughs because she won and reclaimed her daughter. But in that laugh is a hint of madness, an indication that she will never find normalcy in life and that she and her daughter are in for a potentially rough ride ahead.

Director Journal Week 8

Finally we comes to our real shooting day ---17 April.  Production Phase.

Movie Review: Super 8

Source:
tvtropes (2013), retrived from
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThreeActStructure

According to TVTropes(2013), the three act structure is a typical narrative structuring template. The idea is that the story is structured so that all of the action falls into one of three acts, with regular plot-points (or reversals) used to bridge each act, and send the narrative into a different direction than it had previously been going.

The First Act is the Setup. It’s the first quarter of the story, and is where the main characters are introduced and the dramatic The film starts with a steel plant in Lillian, Ohio. Elizabeth Lamb has been killed in an accident. Though their family and friends are sad for her husband, Deputy Jackson Lamb , their main concern is Joe Lamb, Elizabeth and Jackson's son. Joe was more attached to his Mom than his Dad, who was never really been there for his son. Joe's friend Charles has been shooting a Super 8 film for a film festival. Charles has rewritten the the story. Arriving home, Joe meets up with his Dad, Joe explains that he wants to help Charles finish his film. As they film the scene of the train thundering past the station. The truck hits the train, causing a massive (and explosive) derailment. The gang runs for cover, and luckily survives.

The Second Act, the Confrontation, is the longest. In this act, Alice is being captured by unknown creature. The next day, Joe and Charles go to pick up the developed Super 8 film, but Charles is rather upset and cryptic towards Joe. As they examine the film, their thoughts become turned when they see parts of a strange creature emerging from one of the wrecked train cars. As they wonder what it was they just saw, air raid sirens begin to go off. They emerge outside to find the town being evacuated, with everyone being asked to report to the local Military base. Joe and friends get back into town and rescue Alice. They first go to the Middle School. Joe assumes that there may be additional information stored in there to find out about the creature and how to possibly defeat it.

The Third Act, the Resolution, is where the story wraps up (Climax). Joe manages to save Alice, however the creature comes up behind them. Joe stands before it, reasoning with it. The creature acts hostile at first, but even in the face of its bizarre appearance, Joe does not react hostile like the previous treatment it has known. Suddenly, a sound is heard deep in the cave near the creature's lair, and it puts Joe down before returning. Everyone watches as the ship ascends into the sky. Alice and Joe finally get to reunion with their father happily.

Director Journal Week7

31 MARCH -3 APRIL

This week lecture, we learnt about the 3-act structure. 3-act structure is a very old maxim widely adhered to in storytelling and fiction writing today. It can be found in plays, poetry, novels, comic books, short stories, video games, and the movies. 3-act structure has proven to be a valuable weapon in the arsenal of any screenwriter. The 3 acts are labelled as: Act I: Setup, Act II: Confrontation, and Act III: Resolution. I think our PSA project had also applied these elements.

Our completed version of rehearsal PSA video are presented in front of the lecturer and other groups. We received a lot of comments and feedbacks; we will try to improve based on the comments given. Besides, we are still unsure which version is better for real shooting, we should have proper discussion as soon as possible to decide.

The real shooting had been confirmed, and it is on Friday (18 April 2014).Sincerely hope that the real shooting will goes smoothly as expected.

Movie Review:Lizzie McGuire

Basically this movie is all about a teenage girl—Lizzie who have just graduated from middle school, and to celebrate, she is taking part in a class trip to Rome, Italy. Eager to celebrate their new maturity as high school students, Lizzie and her pals-Gordo hope to treasure Italy in exciting ways, but fate has something more spectacular in store for Lizzie.

This movie has a nice opening.  It grab our attention from the very first shot.In the beginning of the movie, it showed the most memorable part for Lizzie’s vacation in Italy.  Paolo bring her visiting around using motorbike. Then, the movie continues with the scene where Lizzie singing and dancing like a pop star which likely indicate her talent and dream. With this opening, there is a strong connection and indication with the middle part of the story when Lizzie discovers that she bears a striking resemblance to Isabella, an Italian teen-pop idol famous for her duets with heart-throb Paolo, he asks Lizzie to take Isabella's place for an upcoming concert. Lizzie, however, isn't sure she feels comfortable stepping into the spotlight, and is even less sure about the way she feels about Paolo, who makes no secret of his infatuation with her. (Rotten Tomatoes, 2003)

As conclusion, a good opening make people have good impression toward the movie and spark our interest in the story to look forward to see what’s next. Lizzie McGuire is a good example for this.

Director Journal Week 6

24-27 MARCH 2014

This week lecture discusses pre-production in detail which consist production planning, pre-shoot technical test, story boarding and rehearsing and etc. Why are these important? According to Scorsese "If you don't put the time in during prep or you cut corners around the necessary equipment, you're going to put the time and money in during post and hope that you come out with maybe a silk purse that may be a really jazzed up sow’s ear.” Hence, pre-production it is crucial to make sure the project’s planning requirements against the other phases in the Cyclical Production Model.

For the group discussion this week, every one of us are giving opportunities to voice out our ideas or suggestions based on the video that finished editing. Different people will have different idea. We trying to improve our project by different ideas, hope it works well. =) As we learnt pre-production is extremely important, and we are ready to prepare for the best outcome by taking our project seriously.

Movie Review: The Dark Skies

1.This film is about the mysterious creatures that follows a young family. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness numerous numbers of disturbing and interruption events involving their family, their safe and home are getting risky. After that they finally find out that their family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying creature—Alien named The Gray, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family.(Movie Fone,2013)

2. The difference between this film with other science fiction film is this is the combination of genre horror with science fiction. According to  Entertainment.ie(2013), Dark Skies is quite a surprisingly effective sci-fi thriller that relies on thriller suspense rather than special effects to impress audience.

3. The kids are considered a very important prop in this film. Because they are the one targeted by the “aliens” and usually creepy thing always occur on kids. Stewart(2013) noted that too many scary movies used kids as props, so he went for a different approach. He would avoid calling “action” and “cut” to set his young actors at ease, and he often shot their scenes first to make sure their attention spans didn't wane. For the background of the story, they are using the young family that living in suburbs.

5. I personally not prefer this style of editing, it’s because too many scenes that shown like flashbacks but actually it’s not. This is quite confusing and audience has to think it over and over to realize the plot and the logic of the story. I’m not resist this style I just find it inconvenient to understand, and this is just my personal of view maybe other people might think that it’s kind of art of editing.

Director Journal Week 5

17-20 March 2014
For this week lecture, we learnt about the basic type of shots theoretically hope that it’s useful to apply it in our coming actual shooting. Besides, on Thursday meeting session, again we are asked to present our production progress so that other groups can give some suggestion or essential idea to improve our production. Since we had done our rehearsal shooting, we done some part of the editing to show to the others. The outcome not satisfy enough as we expected and we are given some suggestion about the shots by Syazwan (Commercial‘s group leader). Thanks a lot dude!  Rehearsal shooting made us understand what actual problem we are going to face when shooting. We experienced it and we will do it better!

According to our director we will have our real shooting on either 17 or 18 Aprilwill decide it soon after well discuss.

Director Journal Week 4

10 March-14/15March 2014

For this week lecture, we learn about the budget of film making. Budget control is important to reduce those unnecessary consumptions.  According to our producer/lecturer Dr. Azlan, our production will get roughly RM 500 as the financial support from HEP.  As I mentioned last week, our group will have rehearsal shooting on Friday (14 March 2014).  So on Thursday, we have our group meeting to discuss about the progress of the production and allocate the job so that our rehearsal shooting on the next day will be runs smoothly.

As you can see that everyone are very concentrate when our director, Shinno giving instruction.

So when comes to the rehearsal shooting day, I’m pleased that everyone comes on time and do the set up efficiently

Movie Review-The Sixth Sense

1.       M. Night Shyamalan also known as Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan is an Indian film director, screen writer and producer. According IMDb.com noted that he born in India but raised in the posh suburban Penn Valley area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, M. Night Shyamalan is the son of two doctors. His passion for filmmaking began when he was given a Super-8 camera at age eight, and even at that young age began to model his career on that of his idol, Steven Spielberg. Besides, the style of directing that M.Night Shyamalan used to is having some sort of twist in the end or surprise ending in his films. He frequently uses shots of people's reflections in various objects. (IMDb.com,2009)

Source

M. Night Shyamalan Biography, retrieved from http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0796117/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm

2.       Dr. Malcolm Crowe is a child psychologist and he got a new patient that has a problem far outside of his profession. Cole Sear is six-years-old child and claims to see the spirits of dead people all around him. Cole has extraordinary powers and can channel the ghosts of those who were troubled. Cole doesn't understand his powers, and he has little control over them. However, he's terrified by what he sees, and Dr. Malcolm is the only one with whom he feels he can share this secret. The Sixth Sense (1999) Dr. Malcolm is then discovering he actually had died one year ago, and he really get shocked.

Source:

The Sixth Sense (1999), retrieved from

3.       "The Sixth Sense" isn't a thriller or horror movie but a genre of drama (tragedy). At first, I thought it was a horror movie but I’m wrong, the storyline is more concentrate on the emotional portray by the character. So, I think M. Night Shyamalan want to change our perception toward this film by the twist plot and the horror part is just to convey the story effectively.

4.       The main character,Dr. Malcolm Crowe and the kid named Cole Sear play very important role in this film. According Roger Ebert (1999),the psychologist is Malcolm Crowe, who is shot one night in his home by an intruder, a man who had been his patient years earlier and believes he was wrongly treated. The man then turns the gun on himself. "The next fall," as the subtitles tell us, we see Crowe mended in body but perhaps not in spirit, as he takes on a new case, a boy named Cole Sear who exhibits some of the same problems as the patient who shot at him. Maybe this time he can get it right. These characters are important in contributing on the effect of the plot, this is because if without the existence of the boy, Dr. Malcolm might not realized that he is actually dead.

Source:

Robert Ebert (1999),retrieved from

5.       Concept ‘twist’ in this film is very important because it relate the beginning and the end of the story in which Dr. Malcolm had been shot down but never reveal that whether he is still alive or not in the beginning of the story. Without this element in the film, the audience won’t feel suspicious on the story. The feeling  of suspicious keep the audience eyes on the film.

Director Journal Week 3

3 MAC 2014 (MONDAY) / 6 MAC 2014 (THURSDAY)

Our group had a new member again named Augustin, he will be joining us as directing team. Like usual, our main director-Shinno explained our project concept to him and we also discuss further on our shooting script and the sequence of the scenes.  We shares idea to make our concept perfect and the most important is we need some different idea and different perspective of view from guy. Before that, since our group members are mostly female, the idea maybe limited on certain view and not variety enough. Here comes a new guy member might let us have a different perspective of view and opinion.

On Thursday, we do not have opportunity to have a discussion with our crew because there is presentation session.  Our chief director-Shinno presented and distributed our group concept and idea in front of other group and lecturer so that they understand what we are going to shoot. Besides, our helpful crew had found some of the props that we are going to use such as the vase, flowers, belt and etc. But, the chair not found yet. We will try to look for it these few days because we are going to use it in this coming rehearsal shooting on Friday (14/3).

That’s all for this week, I really hope that our first rehearsal shooting will be runs smoothly, pray for it. =)

Movie Review- Kill Bill Volume 1

Basically, this movie is all about the assassin, Bill, and his member known as The Vipers left The Bride for dead, but unluckily for them she was just comatose but not dead yet. Four years later, The Bride suddenly awakens from her coma and realizes what has been done to her. She sets off on a bloody mission, setting out to seek revenge on her former master and his deadly squad of assassins. One by one, she kills the two members of the assassin group in Volume1 and she saves Bill for last.

The first person that The Bride meets up with for a fight is Vernita Green. The fight scene here is really incredible. Besides, it also has a great sense of humor. Suddenly, Vernita's young daughter comes home from school in the middle of the fight. The two try their best to play off the situation until Vernita can get the daughter off to her room.  However, The Bride killed Vernita in front of her daughter.

After beating Vernita, The Bride is then traveling to Japan to face O-Ren. The only complaint I have for the anime sequence is that it runs a little too long. From the anime, we are given so much of O-Ren's story that we completely understand how she has become such a terribly killer. I wonder, so how are we supposed to feel when The Bride beats O-Ren in their battle? Before the fight, The Bride gets a sword from a legendary master swordsmaker. O-Ren is very impressed and filled with respect for this weapon.  In the end, The Bride succeeded in revenge and defeat O-Ren.

Overall, I enjoy the background music of this film but the some of the violence battle scenes are too scary and awful for me, I’m not daring enough to watch the whole process.

Director Journal Week 2

24 FEBRURARY  2014 (MONDAY)  /  27 FEBRUARY 2014 (THURSDAY)

For this week, we finally had done our synopsis for “Domestic Violence”. The synopsis below is written in Malay:

On Thursday, we had our first meeting with production crew. We are happy to see that many people attempted to join our crew. We begin our discussion by introduce ourselves and then our main director-Shinno Lim started to explain our concept and synopsis to our production crew.  After that we roughly allocate the task and position such as script writing, shooting script, storyboard, budget control, editing team, technical crew, production manager, and etc. according their ability. However, the job list will be confirmed soon.

We also discuss further on our shooting script.  Most of them tend to give essential ideas/comments/ feedback throughout the discussions. That’s a good start I guess.  Apart from that, we had decided our rehearsal shooting which is on 14/3/2014(Friday), after 3pm. The upcoming actual shooting schedule will be decided as soon as possible. Due to the lack of time, we will continue shooting discussion in detail on next week.

Until now, I really feel that film director is definitely not an easy task, he/she have to guide every single stage of production. Anyhow, I would like to give myself a try to experience this position and I’m looking forward to conduct our project.

Director Journal Week1

17 FEBRUARY 2014 (MONDAY)

This is my first class for The Art of Film Directing and every one of us had been divided into groups for different themes. For our group, the type of film that we got to handle and direct is PSA (Public Service Announcement).  Shinno Lim will be the main director for this project and I with another member-Xi Jia will be the assistants. At first, we do not have any idea on what kind of PSA that is suitable. After being advised by our lecturer, Dr. Azlan, we finally have our own concept. He suggests that we should make something that is easier, achievable with deep awareness. At last, three of us agreed to use “Domestic Violence” as our concept for this PSA project production.

Since our concept has been approved by our lecturer, we start to discuss and roughly come out the content of our project. Our idea will be discuss further next week. We haven’t done much for this week, but we are looking forward to meet our production crew next week. As I know, film director depends on the successful cooperation of many different creative individuals, so hopefully our future crew will do their best for this upcoming production. Besides, we will start to divide our crew into small segments according to their ability.

Generally the responsibility of film director is to direct the making of a film. He or she controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, and visualizes the script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision. As a freshman of assistant film director, I will try my very best to carry out all these responsibilities.
